DUBAI // Two men from Saudi Arabia have appeared in court after police found 199 kilograms of amphetamine tablets in their car.

The two, 26 and 31, were arrested in an undercover operation on December 5 last year.

A police captain said anti-narcotics officers had received a tip-off about them and put them under surveillance.

“They met in a car in a sandy patch then chatted for a while before they were arrested,” said the officer, adding that three large bags containing the drugs were found in the younger man’s vehicle.

The court was told that the younger man told police he was offered 900,000 Saudi riyals (Dh881,000) by a man in Saudi to arrange for the second defendant to deliver the drugs to an Emirati man in Dubai.

Police said the defendants were arrested before making the delivery.

In Dubai Criminal Court, they denied possessing amphetamine tablets to sell.

“I didn’t possess anything,” the younger man said, while the other admitted to using drugs but, “I took them in KSA, not here”.

The next hearing is scheduled for May 25.
