DUBAI // A man who broke into a mobile phone shop and stole more than Dh120,000 worth of memory cards was sentenced to two years in jail by the Dubai Criminal Court on Tuesday morning.

Unemployed Nigerian A Z, 22, confessed in court last September to taking 8,312 memory cards.

Records show that on September 1 last year, the owner of the mobile phone shop came to work, saw the door had been broken and called police.

“It was 9am. I checked the items inside and found that 8,312 memory cards of different capacities worth Dh127,567 were stolen,” said Iranian K A, 51. “I checked the cameras I had in the shop and saw an African man carrying out the robbery at exactly 4.53am.”

A Z was found to be already detained by police for a different robbery case. He was questioned and confessed to stealing the cards with the help of another man, who remains at large.

He will be deported after completing his jail term.
