ABU DHABI // Medical professionals have been advised by the Ministry of Health to refrain from wearing laboratory coats outside of medical schools or institutions to avoid transmission of diseases.
The Ministry for Public Health Policies and Licensing issued a circular at the weekend stating the order, the state news agency Wam reported.
“Recently, many medical professionals and medical students have been observed wearing the lab coats when they leave their work places or universities,” said the circular. “This has become a phenomenon at public places like mosques, marketplaces, TV interviews, conferences and others.”
Based on research, the circular said, lab coat sleeves and pockets may carry contagious germs. As a result, many states have banned lab coats from being worn in public places.
