DUBAI// A man who stabbed his roommate to death because he woke him up by switching on the light in their accommodation has been jailed up for seven years.

Dubai Criminal Court was told that Indian F K, 29, and victim, M Y, also from India, and a third man R R were preparing to sleep in their room in Dubai Investment Park at around 10pm on April 9 this year. After turning off the lights, M Y turned them back on.

“F K turned off the light and headed to bed but M Y, for some reason, turned on the light again. F K turned it off, and again the victim turned it on. This happened a few times before the two engaged in a fight,” testified Indian driver S M, 23.

He said R R came running to his room and told him F K and M Y were fighting. By the time they got to the room they found the victim bleeding from his chest and spitting blood while F K was sat on his bed.

“I called for an ambulance which arrived within 10 minutes to find M Y dead,” said SM.

Emirati policeman S G, 20, said he found the victim on the floor in a pool of blood with a stab wound to the chest, “I found bloody footprints and followed them then found the defendant standing alone near some trees behind the accommodation.”

He noted that F K had a head injury and bruises on his neck.

A forensics report found that M Y was stabbed once in his right lung.

F K denied killing his countryman intentionally. The court convicted him of premeditated murder and sentenced him to seven years in jail to be followed by deportation.

The verdict remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
