DUBAI // An unemployed man will spend a year in jail for stabbing a maintenance technician to steal a Nokia phone and Dh200 in cash.

On February 19, the 26-year-old Bangladeshi victim was walking with a friend at a metro station in Al Riqqa area when at about 2.30am when he was attacked, Dubai Criminal Court heard.

“He stabbed me in the left leg and left shoulder, then snatched two mobile phones – a Nokia and a Samsung Galaxy – and my wallet, which contained Dh200, then took off,” the victim said, according to court records.

The technician’s Indian friend, a salesman, called police, who arrived with an ambulance that took the Bangladeshi to hospital. The Emirati defendant was arrested shortly after and the victim’s friend identified him.

“We arrested him two days after the incident,” a 34-year-old Emirati policeman said.

“He admitted assaulting the man because they had old differences but he denied robbing him. He also told me he never leaves home without his knife.”

In court last April, the Emirati denied charges of robbery and physical assault. However, he was found guilty this week and sentenced to jail.
