ABU DHABI // A man who threatened a women and insulted her woman on social media will spend three months in jail before being deported — the Supreme Court has ruled.
EK, an Arab, was accused of assaulting a woman by attempting to kiss her.
The victim also accused him of threatening to place a snake in her car, defaming her on Facebook and using telecommunications to harass her.
She added that he insulted her face to face by accusing her of prostitution and claiming he knew all her clients.
The Ajman Court of First Instance found him guilty of using telecommunications to harass her, as he continuously called her, despite not having any legitimate relationship with her, and was sentenced to one month in prison.
He was also convicted of committing a cyber crime offence by writing that she leads a “drunken night lifestyle” on her Facebook profile, and he was sentenced to two months in jail followed by deportation.
He appealed the verdict, but the appeals court upheld the verdict.
He then raised the verdict for appeal at the Supreme Court, arguing he should not have been sentenced to deportation because he does not impose any danger on society.
However, the court rejected his argument, saying any violation of the cyber crime law leads to deportation.
He also argued that the woman had withdrawn her accusations against him at the police station earlier.
The court said it was evident in the case files the woman had not withdrawn her complaint.
The Supreme Court upheld the initial verdict.
