Man drowns off JBR beach on Saturday



DUBAI // A man, believed to be Romanian, drowned off Jumeirah Beach Residence beach on Saturday afternoon, police confirmed.

“My friend and I were at the beach near the Sheraton Hotel when a security guard spotted a man who he said seemed to be drowning,” said a witness, who wished to remain anonymous.

“The man in the water did not seem to be in distress, his arms were not flailing, he did not seem to be panicking. But all of a sudden he disappeared under water.”

The witness said four beachgoers and two men on a boat began to look for the victim.

“About 20 minutes later, we saw two of the men pulling the man to shore, and he was unresponsive,” said the witness, adding that more than one person tried perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation until the authorities, along with an ambulance, arrived.

Police said the death is under investigation.
