ABU DHABI // A man who stole Dh500,000 from a supermarket and later returned Dh260,000 has asked a court to pardon him from paying the remaining amount.

I I, from the Philippines, worked for a supermarket where his responsibility was to collect the cashier money from J J and M R, also from the Philippines, at the end of each day.

On the day in question he received half a million dirhams and decided to borrow the money to start a project and pay it back later, he told the Appeals Court on Monday.

He had paid back Dh260,000 before being caught.

“I have already paid more than half the amount and the time I spent in jail is punishment enough,” he said. “I ask the court to pardon me and let me go.”

The judge asked what would be done about the remaining Dh240,000 and what he planned to do with it.

“I cannot pay that amount,” he answered.

The three other defendants denied their connection to the theft saying their job as cashiers was to give the money to I I at the end of the day and they said did not have anything to do with the stolen money.

I I confirmed their statements.

A verdict will be announced on January 19.
