DUBAI // A man and a woman were killed on Emirates Road when their Toyota saloon ran into a lorry parked on the side of the road. Police said the man lost control of the car and crashed into the back of the lorry at 10.15pm on Sunday, between the second and first bridge on the Sharjah-bound carriageway. A police spokesman said the man and his female passenger, both Arabs aged in their 20s, were killed instantly. Their relationship was unknown.

Police said the Toyota hit the lorry so hard its front half became wedged under the truck. Rescue workers were forced to use hydraulic equipment to free the bodies. Ten people were killed on Dubai's roads over the National Day and Eid holidays, police said. In the same period police officers issued 11,074 fines to motorists, 735 to jaywalkers, and 36 to motorcyclists. They also confiscated 37 cars and 14 buses.
