DUBAI // An accountant has confessed to installing a hidden camera in a male toilet so he could spy on its users.

“Yes I did it,” said the Kenyan defendant EO, 35, at the criminal court on Sunday.

The camera was found in the public toilets at the Deira City Centre mall on December 1 last year by a Bangadeshi cleaner.

“It was 9pm when I went to clean the bathroom and noticed a black, small-sized camera placed in the ventilator and directed towards the toilets,” said the cleaner, M A, 26.

He said that he could not tell if it was recording at the time he found it. “I didn’t touch it,” he said.

M A informed his supervisor who called police.

When they went through footage on the camera, police found the defendant had recorded himself as he placed the camera in the toilets.

After circulating a description of the suspect, he was arrested on December 30.

“He confessed willingly to installing the camera so he can pleasure himself at the sight of naked men,” said the policeman who interrogated him.

The verdict will be announced on April 8.
