DUBAI // Two maids were cleared of stealing jewellery and three smartphones from a palace belonging to a member of Dubai’s ruling family.

Dubai Criminal Court acquitted the Sri Lankans, aged 34 and 31, of charges of theft.

In March, a 42-year-old Egyptian supervisor said she saw one of the maids rushing to her room in a suspicious manner and followed her.

“I saw her hiding something in her room and when I checked I found jewellery and three iPhones,” she said, adding she questioned the maid before reporting the incident to police.
