DUBAI // A maid has been convicted of stealing 2,000 euros from her sponsor after revealing the theft to a friend on Facebook.

The 41-year-old Filipina took the cash from her sponsor’s shirt pocket on August 20 last year.

“It was about 1pm when I hung up my shirt in the bathroom. When I returned at about 4pm, the money was gone,” said the Jordanian businessman, adding that he had no reason to suspect the maid as there was often money in the house and she had never taken it in the past.

“Three days later she ran away, after which I reported the theft to police and also contacted the woman who got us the maid,” said the 74-year-old.

A Filipina teacher who arranged for the maid to work at the man’s house said the defendant told her on Facebook she had been stealing from her boss and planned to leave the country.

The maid denied a charge of theft at the Dubai Criminal Court last month but was found guilty after prosecutors showed the court the Facebook conversation.

She will be deported after completing her three-month prison term.
