DUBAI // A maid accused of stealing jewellery worth Dh50,000 and leaving children unattended before preparing to flee the country denied the charges on Thursday.
While he and his wife were at work, the father of the children tried to call maid D K, 31, several times without success. When he eventually got through to one of his children, the boy said she had left them at the house unattended.
The father returned home after 30 minutes and, sensing foul play, said he checked the family’s belongings and found his wife’s jewellery was missing. He immediately called the police.
Emirati policeman M H, 33, started monitoring the suspect near her home and, when he saw D K carrying a luggage carrier, she was arrested. A search uncovered the stolen jewellery in one of her bags, police said.
At the police station the defendant admitted stealing the jewellery, but denied it at Dubai Criminal Court on Thursday, claiming that she had returned it to her employer.
The next hearing is on March 10.
