DUBAI // An annual triathlon in Lebanon has been renamed this year in honour of Roy Nasr, who won the event for the last two years.
Nasr, 49, was laid to rest yesterday after a funeral service at St Francis of Assisi Church, in Jebel Ali.
He was hit and killed by a drunk driver on Friday morning while cycling near Safa Park with two friends.
The Lebanese expatriate competed in the national competition in his homeland in 2011 and 2012, winning both events.
He had just confirmed he would be defending his title at this year's event, to be held in Batroun, on September 29.
A statement was issued by triathlon organisers this morning confirming the name change.
"Roy was a real sportsman and a great supporter of our events – he never had a word of complaint, even though he competed at professional-level events around the world," the statement said.
"We are proud to have known Roy and will miss his humble and generous spirit.
"As a mark of respect for Roy and his family, the 2013 triathlon will be known as the Roy Nasr Batroun Triathlon, and the race will be held in his memory.
"There will be a special trophy for the fastest overall time in the Olympic category (male or female) – the Roy Nasr Trophy."
