DUBAI // A tourist who slashed one of his wrists with a bread knife to get his wife’s attention was yesterday sentenced to a month in jail and deportation.
F W, 31, from Norway, cut himself during a row with his wife then locked himself in the bathroom and fell unconscious. When police arrived they had to break down the door before taking him to Rashid Hospital for life-saving treatment.
He denied a charge of attempting suicide, but was found guilty by the Misdemeanours Court.
During his trial, the court heard that he had arrived in the emirate in July 2013 to visit his wife, an expatriate worker.
On August 22 the couple threw a dinner party at the wife’s home in Al Jafilia and began arguing at about 3am shortly after the last guest left.
The man said he was cutting some bread during the argument and cut himself out of anger and sadness. He said he missed his wife and was jealous because she lived alone.
“I locked myself in the bathroom because I was ashamed of what I did,” he said.
His wife testified that since the pair married in October 2012, her husband would visit her in Dubai to try to find a job and that on these occasions he often became jealous of her male friends. “When the dinner party was over, we argued because he accused me of not paying him enough attention,” said the wife.
She said he then went to the kitchen and cut his wrist.
When her husband locked himself in the bathroom she called the building’s security guard to help her break down the door but they could not, and called the police instead.
When officers arrived they found blood all over the living room and in the bathroom’s rubbish bin.
