An innovation centre at the heart of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park offering green energy education is nearing completion, officials have said.

Executives from Dubai Electricity and Water Authority visited the site to check on progress at the huge solar park near Al Maktoum International Airport.

Saeed Al Tayer, Dewa managing director, visited the site with officials to check on progress of the centre, that aims to educate more people on the need for clean energy solutions.

It is the largest single-site solar park in the world, with an expected capacity of 5,000 megawatts by 2030 and total investments worth Dh50 billion.

Inside the 90-metre-high Innovation Centre, visitors can learn about renewable energy at an exhibition on solar power.

On completion, the 4,000 sq m fully equipped centre will be spread across four floors and host conferences, events, training courses primarily related to green and sustainable initiatives.

The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy aims to diversify power provision by 2050, by supplying 75 per cent of the emirate’s total output from clean energy, and 25 per cent by 2030.

In April, Dewa said Dubai’s utilities sector will require Dh86 billion investment before 2024, with 45 per cent of spending from the private sector.

Dubai’s utility is also evaluating bids for the Gulf region’s first hydroelectric power plant in Hatta, an area of Dubai in the eastern Hajar mountains, with a 250MW capacity.

The plant will have two 125 MW turbines capable of sending power to the grid within 90 seconds.
