LONDON // Injured Polish Formula One driver Robert Kubica will have a final operation on his elbow in Italy on Wednesday after surgery last week, his Lotus Renault team confirmed today.

"The latest update on Robert is that his condition remains positive," the team said in a statement.

"He will stay in intensive care for the next couple of days to allow a complete check-up and to avoid another change of department before his final operation.

"His good general condition means that the final surgery is scheduled for Wednesday."

Kubica has been in hospital since he suffered serious injuries in a February 6 crash while competing in a minor rally near Genoa in Italy.

The 26-year-old underwent seven hours of surgery on the day of the accident amid fears that he might lose the use of his right hand.

He was then taken out of intensive care but was readmitted after further surgery on Friday to fix his broken arm and leg.

Germany's Nick Heidfeld, Kubica's former teammate at BMW-Sauber, is expected to replace him for at least the next three months and possibly the entire season.

The season starts in Bahrain on March 13.
