DUBAI // A man wanted for alleged fraud in Dubai has been arrested in India on charges of assaulting police and running a prostitution operation there.
Lalji Thakur Singh, 61, a Canadian national of Indian origin, was arrested in a bar on the outskirts of Mumbai.
Mr Singh, who has been released on bail, will be extradited to the UAE if necessary, a senior Indian police official said. Police have also confiscated his passport.
Authorities in India are waiting for further instructions from Dubai Police, who had issued an Interpol notice asking that police in other countries arrest Mr Singh on the fraud charges.
Dubai Police would not comment on the fraud charges against Mr Singh, or whether they plan to request his extradition.
Mr Singh was arrested last month along with 45 men and six women from the bar where he worked in Andheri, a suburb of Mumbai. Officials said he attacked the Mumbai police's special squad and was also detained under India's Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act.
"He was arrested for assaulting a government official," said Deven Bharti, the additional commissioner of police in Mumbai.
"We have also charged him with keeping the bar open beyond the restricted time."
"We have informed Interpol about the arrest and that he is in Mumbai now. We are now waiting for Dubai Police through Interpol to come back to us and let us know if he should be extradited or what should be done."
Police said a charge sheet would be filed against Mr Singh, and he would serve time in an Indian prison before he could be extradited. "He will be extradited depending on how and what Interpol informs us," Mr Bharti said.
India and the UAE signed an extradition treaty in 1999, which came into force in 2000. The two countries have also signed treaties providing for co-operation in Extradition, Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters and Juridical and Judicial Cooperation in Civil and Commercial Matters.
