DUBAI // The Real Estate Regulatory Agency (Rera) plays an important role in a variety of issues related to the property sector in Dubai.
As a result it is often the first stop for people who need guidance or help resolving a dispute.
"The biggest thing at the moment has been owners' associations and the demand for people to have them officially recognised," said Ludmila Yamalova, a managing partner at HPL Yamalova & Plewka JLT, Legal consultancy.
"It's also the first place most people go when they have a dispute with a particular developer of service fees and investors usually go to Rera if they want an update on a project."
A growing issue for many people, however, are real-estate brokers and brokerage companies.
"There have been cases where real estate brokers have acted in a fraudulent manner by forging contracts," she said.
Rera has the power to fine brokers and, as a last resort, delist them from practicing.
"The best thing to do if you're making a complaint is to go in person.
"Rera did set up an online system for people, but it's more effective if they see you in person," she added.
