Jack Burlot, recalls that he met the model, possibly named Cathy, at his hotel with a group from Cacharel, the French fashion label that made its mark on the 70s with flowing bohemian dresses and colourful floral Liberty fabrics.
People were surprised but really nice with us, Burlot says. “I asked them to be in the photographs. It was very strange for them ... but they played the game"
Burlot had the idea of taking her out on an impromptu fashion shoot in the local surroundings. “At this time it was a little bit difficult to do this sort of thing, he says
They managed to shoot among fishermen at the port and smiling onlookers at Qasr Al Hosn, the fortified palace that at the time was being used for government offices
The National’s fashion director, Katie Trotter, notes that it was unusual at the time to shoot models alongside real people, even in far-off lands
When asked how the model changed her outfits, Burlot laughs. Very good question. Maybe we came back to the hotel to change
