Heavy rain, thunder may hit southern UAE over next few days

Heavy rain and thunder could hit the southern region of the country over the next few days, the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology has said.

A sharp decrease in the temperature over Liwa, from 42°C to 24°C, recorded earlier this week, has been blamed for the potentially tumultuous conditions.

Residents are also being warned of high winds, which have led to lower visibility.

Winds exceeding 45 kph were recorded by the centre’s Mezaira weather station, which also recorded minimal rainfall.

Although adverse weather conditions are common in this area, and especially so at this time of year, aircraft flying over the area should take caution, the centre warned.

In other parts of the UAE, early morning drivers commuting between different emirates have been warned to keep an eye out for mist and fog.

Drivers paid heed to the warnings sent out over the last few days with no accidents reported on the highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai yesterday morning, said Lt Imran Abdullah, of the Dubai traffic police.
