Walk to raise awareness of diabetes

DUBAI // People are being encouraged to get out and about and walk more to help raise awareness of diabetes and how to combat the condition.

As part of a campaign by the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, schools, companies and individuals are invited to take part in the Walk 2015 initiative.

“It is good to take some moderate exercise just before you break your fast at iftar and again just before going to bed, as well as right before suhoor,” said Dr Saf Naqvi, ICLDC’s medical director, consultant physician and endocrinologist.

“It is quite warm during Ramadan and outdoor exercise might not always be the best option, so try to include indoor activities like climbing the stairs. Start slowly and gradually with two flights at a time and refrain from pushing yourself too hard.”

Community events held through the year will encourage people to adopt a balanced diet, cook healthy meals and promote exercise.

The UAE came 16th in a list of countries worldwide with the highest diabetes prevalent per capita. About 387 million people are living with diabetes worldwide, according to the International Diabetes Federation figures.

“During Ramadan, slow release carbohydrates are an excellent option. These include wholegrain bread and basmati rice. Fast release carbs, sugary food and food otherwise known as high-glycaemic index are best avoided, such as potatoes and white bread,” said ICLDC’s dietician Fatima Sadek.
