Sharjah municipal authorities have seized half a tonne of watermelon imported from Iran as a precaution over holes in the fruits deemed suspicious.

The Ministry of Environment and Water, however, said on Thursday that initial reports concluded that the watermelon had been infected with beetles, although the insects’ lifecycle had completed and there was no evidence of their presence in the melons.

Health inspection teams have seized the watermelon from outlets selling the fruit as a precaution, Ali Tunaiji, Al Dhaid Municipality, said.
