Awareness of newborn jaundice was the focus of a Dubai Health Authority twitter clinic held on Thursday.

“Jaundice is very common in new-born babies,” said Dr Yaser El Saba, a senior specialist neonatologist at Dubai Hospital who took part in the clinic. And although it “does not necessarily mean the baby is ill, it is important that jaundice is monitored to ensure that the bilirubin [a pigment found in bile] level does not get too high”, the doctor said.

If left untreated, jaundice can lead to permanent brain damage, cerebral palsy or death.
