Geldof aid for special-needs children in the UAE

DUBAI // He had an international hit with The Great Song of Indifference, but to a group of special-needs children in the UAE Bob Geldof is anything but uncaring.

The Irish musician and activist recently visited children from the Manzil Centre to rub shoulders and help out with arts projects.

At a recent event at Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, Geldof, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, also accepted the role of honorary ambassador for the centre, said Manzil director Dr Ayesha Husaini.

The centre has created a Bob Geldof bracelet that it will sell to raise funds.

Manzil, founded in 2004, has about 40 students and more than 20 staff members. The centre is supported by corporate sponsorships and personal donations.

Dr Husaini describes the centre as a “boutique” effort to serve children and youth with disabilities. The word Manzil means “destination” in Urdu and “home” in Arabic. The centre’s ultimate goal is to integrate children into mainstream society, she said.

The centre provides students with education, therapy, support services for mainstream schooling, vocational training and help in job seeking.

“We have been very, very proud of that particular programme,” Dr Husaini said. “We call it Pride: people receiving independence and dignity through employment.

"We ensure that people get to stand on their own two feet."
