DUBAI // The National's second Cycle to Work UAE campaign has drawn businesses, organisations and individuals to raise awareness about the benefits of cycling.
In the run-up to Cycle to Work Day on Tuesday, there have been inspirational stories from first-time cyclists and regular riders who will use the bicycle instead of driving to work.
The campaign seeks to motivate residents to ditch their sedentary lifestyle for two-wheeled action. It has the support of people from all walks of life including embassy staff, healthcare professionals, sales managers, housewives and college students.
"The return of #CycleToWorkUAE marks The National's commitment to encouraging the community to adopt healthy and sustainable lifestyles," said Mohammed Al Otaiba, the Editor-in-Chief of The National.
“Though the immediate goal is to cycle rather than drive for a day, the long-term target is to facilitate the growth of a community that is aware of cycling’s positive health, environmental, and social benefits as the UAE develops into an accessible, cycle-friendly space for all.”
Before one gets on the saddle, it is important to have the right equipment. With a bewildering array of bicycles to choose from, it is crucial to find one that fits you.
The staff of bicycle shops can advise on what is best for you. These shops include BeSport in Mushrif Mall in Abu Dhabi, Wolfi’s Bike Shop on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, and the Cycle Hub in Motor City.
The three main types of bicycles are mountain bikes, road bikes and hybrid or commuter bikes.
Bicycles also vary in the size of their tyres and wheels, the materials used in the frame, as well as the types of handlebars and saddles.
Novice cyclists are advised to invest in a good-quality bicycle. Although spending only about Dh1,000 seems appealing, the cost of servicing could be more in the long run.
A good-quality, entry-level bicycle costs between Dh2,000 and Dh4,000.
Prices for high-end mountain bicycles or road bicycles can be as much as Dh45,000 to Dh70,000.
The necessary accessories include a helmet, lights, refillable water bottle and cage, cycling shorts and jerseys, sunglasses and a bicycle rack for your car.
The final piece in the puzzle is finding somewhere safe to cycle. In recent years a number of dedicated cycling tracks have been built to encourage greater participation.
There are cycling paths at Nad Al Sheba, Al Qudra, Al Barsha Park, Mushrif Park and the Jumeirah Beach Road.
Routes have been set up to allow safe participation in the Cycle to Work event on Tuesday.
In Abu Dhabi, these include roads in Al Maryah, Corniche Road, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Street, Zayed First Street, Al Falah Street, Sheikh Zayed Road along the Eastern Mangroves, Al Khaleej Al Arabi Road, around Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Khalifa Park and part of Sultan bin Zayed the First Street.
In Dubai, there are routes along Sufouh Road and around Dubai Marina, part of Jumeirah Beach Road, Arabian Ranches along Al Qudra Road towards Bab Al Shams, Al Rigga Road, Al Fahidi, Mushrif Park cycle track, Al Warqa cycle path, and Al Khawaneej cycle track.
People who wish to take part on Tuesday are advised to use the hard shoulder of roads, service roads and walkways. Be sure to wear a helmet and high visibility fluorescent clothing.
