Dubai launches public transport cleaning campaign

More than 1,000 workers will target Dubai Metro, Tram, buses and taxis

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has launched a major cleaning campaign in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Over the coming days, more than 1,000 workers will aim to sterilize Dubai Metro and Tram, along with hundreds of buses and taxis.

So far, there are thought to be more than 117,000 cases of coronavirus globally, resulting in some 4,200 deaths.

Authorities around the world are seeking ways to help mitigate the potential spread of the infection, including encouraging members of the public to regularly wash their hands.

On Tuesday, the Dubai Media Office, posted a video on Twitter informing residents of the city of its plans.

"The RTA is conducting an extensive cleaning and sterilization campaign covering public transport in the city," it said.

"The measures in place help guarantee a safe journey to around 1.5 million daily public transport commuters."
