DUBAI // Plans have been approved for a Dh290 million expansion of Dubai Hospital, including a six-storey building for specialist outpatient clinics.
The project was on Tuesday given approval by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance.
The first phase, which will cost about Dh100m, will include the new outpatient building that will cover 17,800 square metres and include 142 clinics – three times the current number at the Deira hospital.
“The Dubai Health Authority is keen on ensuring that we provide high quality specialised care to our population and visitors alike,” said Humaid Al Qatami, the authority’s director general.
“The expansion will provide a dedicated area for outpatient services, which in turn will reduce the waiting time at the hospital.”
The ground floor will house diagnostic services and a pharmacy, while the first floor will feature 21 endocrinology and diabetes clinics and 13 for rheumatism and immunology.
The second floor will have six internal medicine and 17 urology clinics. The third will include six cardiology and 10 blood disease clinics, and the fourth will have 12 for obstetrics and gynaecology and 13 for paediatrics.
Nineteen clinics for ophthalmology will make up the fifth floor, with 25 dental offices on the sixth.
“Dubai’s population is increasing and there is a shortage of beds in the emirate,” said Dr Wael Lakkis, a gynaecologist and obstetrician at the Jumeirah American Clinic. “Every new hospital gets filled up right away. There is no medical centre, especially inpatient, that sits idle in Dubai.”
He said medical and educational services were two areas that lagged in a growing city.
“There is so far no waiting list on hospitals like there are in schools but they’re filling up very quickly,” said Dr Lakkis.
The second phase will include the addition of lecture halls and workshops, and a car park with more than 1,200 spaces for visitors.

Important questions to consider
1. Where on the plane does my pet travel?
There are different types of travel available for pets:
- Manifest cargo
- Excess luggage in the hold
- Excess luggage in the cabin
Each option is safe. The feasibility of each option is based on the size and breed of your pet, the airline they are traveling on and country they are travelling to.
2. What is the difference between my pet traveling as manifest cargo or as excess luggage?
If traveling as manifest cargo, your pet is traveling in the front hold of the plane and can travel with or without you being on the same plane. The cost of your pets travel is based on volumetric weight, in other words, the size of their travel crate.
If traveling as excess luggage, your pet will be in the rear hold of the plane and must be traveling under the ticket of a human passenger. The cost of your pets travel is based on the actual (combined) weight of your pet in their crate.
3. What happens when my pet arrives in the country they are traveling to?
As soon as the flight arrives, your pet will be taken from the plane straight to the airport terminal.
If your pet is traveling as excess luggage, they will taken to the oversized luggage area in the arrival hall. Once you clear passport control, you will be able to collect them at the same time as your normal luggage. As you exit the airport via the ‘something to declare’ customs channel you will be asked to present your pets travel paperwork to the customs official and / or the vet on duty.
If your pet is traveling as manifest cargo, they will be taken to the Animal Reception Centre. There, their documentation will be reviewed by the staff of the ARC to ensure all is in order. At the same time, relevant customs formalities will be completed by staff based at the arriving airport.
4. How long does the travel paperwork and other travel preparations take?
This depends entirely on the location that your pet is traveling to. Your pet relocation compnay will provide you with an accurate timeline of how long the relevant preparations will take and at what point in the process the various steps must be taken.
In some cases they can get your pet ‘travel ready’ in a few days. In others it can be up to six months or more.
5. What vaccinations does my pet need to travel?
Regardless of where your pet is traveling, they will need certain vaccinations. The exact vaccinations they need are entirely dependent on the location they are traveling to. The one vaccination that is mandatory for every country your pet may travel to is a rabies vaccination.
Other vaccinations may also be necessary. These will be advised to you as relevant. In every situation, it is essential to keep your vaccinations current and to not miss a due date, even by one day. To do so could severely hinder your pets travel plans.

What are NFTs?
Are non-fungible tokens a currency, asset, or a licensing instrument? Arnab Das, global market strategist EMEA at Invesco, says they are mix of all of three.
You can buy, hold and use NFTs just like US dollars and Bitcoins. “They can appreciate in value and even produce cash flows.”
However, while money is fungible, NFTs are not. “One Bitcoin, dollar, euro or dirham is largely indistinguishable from the next. Nothing ties a dollar bill to a particular owner, for example. Nor does it tie you to to any goods, services or assets you bought with that currency. In contrast, NFTs confer specific ownership,” Mr Das says.
This makes NFTs closer to a piece of intellectual property such as a work of art or licence, as you can claim royalties or profit by exchanging it at a higher value later, Mr Das says. “They could provide a sustainable income stream.”
This income will depend on future demand and use, which makes NFTs difficult to value. “However, there is a credible use case for many forms of intellectual property, notably art, songs, videos,” Mr Das says.
