Coronavirus: UAE registers 240 new cases of Covid-19 as total reaches 1,264

Authorities also announce 12 recoveries and one death

The UAE announced 240 new cases of coronavirus, 12 recoveries and one death on Friday.

The new cases bring the country's total tally to 1,264 including 108 recoveries and nine deaths.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention said the cases were identified during contact tracing and were all stable. It said they contracted the disease because they did not comply with advice to self-isolate and practise social distancing, officials said.

The patient who died was from an Asian country and aged 51. The ministry said they suffered from an underlying chronic disease and had kidney failure.

Last week, the ministry revealed the UAE had completed more than 220,000 laboratory tests for coronavirus.

The latest analysis of global figures has the UAE sixth in the world for population testing, regarded as the gold standard for limiting contagion.

Testing will continue at an even greater pace after Abu Dhabi opened its first drive-through testing centre in Zayed Sports City. Since its inauguration the facility has conducted almost 3,000 tests.

More centres are due to open across the rest of the country, including three in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, with each capable of testing 600 people a day.
