Dubai Police has distributed more than 1,000 3D-printed face shields to officers working on the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic.
The shields will offer crucial protect to officers who are at a greater risk of infection while in the line of duty.
Healthcare workers are increasingly using the protective item and now police officers and ambulance personnel will also benefit from them.
“The 3D-printed face shields aim to ensure the safety of our police officers who are working on the frontlines,” said a Dubai Police official.
“Unlike the regular face masks which provide limited protection by merely covering the nose and mouth, these face shields protect other exposed areas by covering the entire face.”
Reports have shown that the virus can be transmitted when contaminated droplets enter the body through the eyes, nose or mouth.
The face shields, made by Proto21 3D Printing, are worn over the face masks and are able to cover the eyes. Lightweight and easy to use, they can also be attached behind the ears.
The top head mount of the shield is reusable and can be sanitised, while its front transparent visor is replaceable.
Dubai Police is able to speed up the manufacturing process when required by using 3D printing technology.
Separately, Immensa Technology Labs factories in Sharjah and Dubai are also producing 3D-printed face shields for essential personnel.
Each mask costs no more than Dh15 and can be produced in about 20 minutes.
Due to the high demand, they have increased production from a few hundred to more than 40,000.
