DUBAI // Next month, former Team GB rower Cameron Nichol will be in Dubai passing on some of his expert know-how.

His visit comes as the emirate is preparing to host athletic competitions, including the Dubai Fitness Championships and UAE Fitness Movement.

A former Dubai resident, Mr Nichol – who won silver at the 2010 and 2011 World Rowing Championships – is now a full-time doctor and shares his expertise in his spare time.

“Combining full-time Olympic rowing training with medical school was tough, and after the London Games, I returned to my medical studies to finish my qualification as a doctor,” the 28-year-old said.

Although he does not view himself as a role model despite his achievements, Mr Nichol hopes to inspire Dubai’s athletes.

“I value experiences with successful sports men and women immensely. Those moments of inspiration can fuel a lifetime of pursuing a dream.

“In just three years after picking up an oar, I was invited to train with the Olympic team and another three years later, was in London 2012. My fast progress was due to continuously rowing with Olympic and world champions. I learnt so much. The main thing was realising they were normal human beings willing to sacrifice an awful lot.”

British expatriate Claire Noble, 36, competes in local fitness competitions. She has been following Mr Nichol’s workouts and will be attending the seminars at the Inner Fight gym in Al Quoz.

“There is a lot more to rowing than people realise, especially when combined with other movements.

“Visiting athletes of this calibre are hugely beneficial to local athletes who wish to improve, no matter what their sport.”
