Health authorities in Abu Dhabi have launched a safety awareness campaign aimed at fitness clubs in the emirate.

Officials said staff would be conducting a series of inspections designed ensure every centre met their rigorous standards.

Dr Saeed Al Rumaithi, head of public safety at Abu Dhabi municipality, said checks would be carried out to prevent steroid abuse.

He also said inspectors would advise clubs on equipment safety, ensuring running machines and other gym apparatus were properly maintained.

“We must work to protect [young people] and maintain their health within a framework according to required standards,” he said.
