Hundreds of traffic lights in Dubai have been linked up to a system that calculates traffic volume on main roads and informs motorists of delays using GPS technology.
About 300 junctions have been linked to the central light traffic control system. An extra 100 junctions will be added by June. The system computes the volume of congestion on main and express roads, as well as detecting hold-ups caused by accidents and breakdowns.
The system will eventually be able to calculate trip timings and relay the information to motorists using GPS technology.
