When is the UAE's next holiday?

Eid Al Fitr is over. And for some, the two-day holiday came without any extra days off work.

Returning to the office ahead of another work week and a long summer, one cannot be blamed for stealing a passing glance at the calendar to see when the next holiday may be.

Those seeking to plan their next holiday will not have to wait long as Eid Al Adha is expected to begin on August 21, although the official date is subject to the moon-sighting.

The UAE tends to celebrate with a public holiday starting on Arafat Day (the day before Eid Al Adha) and lasting for three days. August 20 will fall on a Monday so it is hoped that a midweek break awaits every public and private sector employee this summer.

A few weeks later, the Hijri New Year is expected to fall on Tuesday, September 11, although the exact date will be announced closer to the time.

After that comes the Prophet's Birthday, also subject to an official Government announcement, which will fall around November 19, starting the busiest holiday season for the UAE.

Commemoration Day will be held, as usual, on Friday, November 30, and National Day — celebrating the 47th year since the unification of the Emirates — will fall on Sunday, December 2.

The UAE's biggest party will likely spill over into December 3 for public sector employees but official holidays will be announced beforehand.

After National Day, the countdown leading up to the new year begins, with January 1 permanently set as a public holiday.
