Landmarks across the Emirates were lit up in orange on Monday night in solidarity with a campaign against gender-based violence.

The world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, in Dubai, along with the the General Women's Union and Adnoc in Abu Dhabi, were among buildings lit up for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is on November 25 every year.

The move coincided with an annual 16-day campaign that started on Monday and will end on Human Rights Day, on December 10, to promote an end to gender-based violence.

The campaign was launched by the Liaison Office of the United Nation's Women in the GCC states, in collaboration with the UAE General Women's Union.

“All women in the UAE stand in solidarity with millions of peoples around the world against gender-based violence in conflict zones,” said Noura Al Suwaidi, director general of the Women's Union.

Campaigners from around the world will come together over the next few weeks to discuss ways of ending violence against women and girls.

In the streets, in schools, offices, villages and cities, every year, people around the world raise awareness and take action during the 16-day period.
