Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, has arrived in Tanzania as part of her work in support of children with cancer.

Sheikha Jawaher will also participate in the African Conference of International Society for Paediatric Oncology.

The conference is the centrepiece of her visit and will take place in Dar es Salaam from today until Friday.

Salma Kikwete, wife of the Tanzanian president Jakaya Kikwete, will also be attending.

The forum will highlight initiatives and efforts that have improved children’s care and helped to reduce incidences of cancer.

Sheikha Jawaher will visit paediatric cancer hospitals to lend her support during the visit.

Her trip to Tanzania comes within the framework of a partnership agreement with the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) signed in February.

The UICC is one of the the world’s largest cancer-fighting organisations and Sheikha Jawaher will also be an active partner in its coming projects.

Sheikha Jawaher was selected in June last year as the UICC’s international ambassador of the world cancer-declaration programme, and as its international ambassador for childhood cancer.

Her work in supporting cancer-control policies, raising public awareness about the disease and methods of treating it contributed to her selection as an ambassador.

Sheikha Jawaher is also the founder and royal patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients Society and the patron of Pink Caravan – a cancer awareness initiative.
