ABU DHABI // Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, has been presented with the Order of First Class by the Arab Parliament for her work to empower women.
It is the first time that such an award has been conferred on a woman in the Arab world.
A delegation of 10 members from the Arab Parliament on Tuesday arrived in the UAE to present the medal and certificate to Sheikha Fatima, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood.
Dalal Al Zayed, a member of the Arab Parliament and the Shura Council of Bahrain, said Sheikha Fatima, the widow of Sheikh Zayed, the UAE’s Founding President, was concerned with the welfare of all women in the Arab world, not just Emirati women’s.
“We are delighted as members of the Arab Parliament to hand this award to her,” said Ms Al Zayed. “This gives us support and empower our role in the Arab Parliament where we can act and do our best, especially in political fields.”
Ms Al Zayed said she met Sheikha Fatima and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, on Tuesday.
