SHARJAH // The Sharjah Census 2015 committee finished the counting phase of the project, it announced on Wednesday.

As much as 97 per cent of the emirate’s population was covered by the census, and the remaining individuals and families who were not present in their homes during the census period will be allowed to register during the data check and editing phase, said Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani, chairman of the committee as well as the Department of Statistics and Community Development, which carried out the census.

The next phase will start on Saturday to check the accuracy of the information gathered, verifying it against individuals’ and families’ personal data, according to the state news agency, Wam.

Data collection teams faced “some challenges” during the data collection phase, “but most were simple and immediately addressed”, said Abdullah Al Kadeed, director of census operations.

“The challenges were limited to individuals who did not want to cooperate with researchers, but the issue was addressed by forming a special team to handle these exceptional cases.”

The census aims to collect accurate statistical data on population, infrastructure, housing and establishments.
