ABU DHABI // Gift shops and supermarkets have been targeted as part of a government crackdown on the sale of dangerous toys in the capital.

Close to 1,000 toys were checked, with warnings handed out to four rogue retailers by the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council. The names of the retailers have not been specified.

Tests were carried out between March 20 and 24, with further checks carried out in Al Ain and the Western Region, reported Wam, the state news agency.

Offenders were told to remove all items that did not carry Gulf Standardisation Organisation conformity markings from sale.

Mohammed Helal Al Balooshi, director of marketing and communications at the quality council, said: “In conducting regular inspections, QCC seeks to ensure that the quality of toys sold in the market is not compromised and the relevant local and regional standards are strictly maintained.”

Regulations state all toys must display relevant details – including the names of the brand and manufacturer, country of origin, targeted age group and product reference code – clearly printed in Arabic and English in a non-erasable format.

The manufacturer should also specify whether the toy needed to be handled only under the supervision of an adult.
