DUBAI // The emirate’s Government has launched a “knowledge majlis” for senior officials to gain insights from experts on issues related to the region’s future.

The announcement comes less than a week after the creation of a “smart majlis” for residents to brainstorm ideas on how to make Dubai an ultra-modern city. Both initiatives were created under the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.

“Understanding global issues and new trends that are shaping our world, and developing plans to manage these, are vital to our ability to sustain our successes and our growth,” said Sheikh Mohammed.

“The Dubai Knowledge Majlis is a promising initiative that will help us strengthen our strategic thinking on how we can continue to thrive and grow in these rapidly changing and complex times.”

The first session, held on Wednesday, featured a talk by Vali Nasr, a leading US academic and political adviser who is also dean of the Johns Hopkins University international school. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed, president of the Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman of Emirates Group, attended.

Sessions will be held quarterly, said Mona Al Marri, director general of the Dubai Media Office, which organised the majlis. Attendees said the event reflects Dubai’s ethos and is an opportunity to gain new perspectives.
