DUBAI // A Dh6.7 billion project to meet the emirate’s growing power demands has been announced by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.

Over the next three years, 64 more power stations will be built and connected to Dubai’s electrical grid. Each of the 132/11kV substations will have a capacity of 150 megavolt amperes (MVA).

“Dewa has adopted a long-term strategy to increase the efficiency and reliability of its existing infrastructure by keeping up to date with the latest technological advances,” said Saeed Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive of Dewa.

Because of the emirate’s population growth – about 9 per cent over the past year – there has been an increase in peak power demand, up to 7.69 gigawatts in September from 6.4 per cent in the same period in 2014.

Dewa currently has 48 132kV substations under construction, in addition to ongoing work to upgrade existing substations.
