1,480 Emiratis approved for new homes

ABU DHABI // More than 1,400 eligible Emiratis who satisfied all statutory requirements to be granted housing have been issued the final approval by the follow-up committee, as per directives of the President, Sheikh Khalifa.

The approval coincides with celebrations of the nation’s 42nd National Day anniversary.

The 1,480 eligible UAE citizens are among the first and second batches to be granted homes under orders of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Wam the state news agency reported.

The follow-up committee, under the chairmanship of Ahmed Juma Al Za’abi, deputy minister for presidential affairs, also released a preliminary list of 1,553 citizens who form the third batch of applicants for houses and asked them to report to the Ministry of Public Works to complete formalities.

Another list of 80 Emiratis entitled to houses in Al Bidiya area of Fujairah and 37 citizens entitled to houses in Dibba Al Hosn of Sharjah was also released.

Mr Al Zaabi said the committee endorsed the budget for the third phase of the initiatives and submitted findings and recommendations to Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs who will submit these to Sheikh Khalifa.

This phase includes the construction and renovation of 10,000 houses and the building of 2,500 houses in different areas. Maintenance and renovation to about 1,000 houses in remote areas will also be completed.

“Provision of proper housing to the citizens of the UAE has always been a top priority for Sheikh Khalifa,” he said. “The recent lists are considered the largest ever released.”

Mr Al Zaabi said the committee was satisfied with the progress of projects under way.

The completed projects, built at a cost of Dh6 billion, include hospitals, clinics, health centres, roads, bridges, dams, houses and mosques

“Citizens are already starting to benefit from the projects,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing progress at the same pace in the remaining projects.”

The low down on MPS

What is myofascial pain syndrome?

Myofascial pain syndrome refers to pain and inflammation in the body’s soft tissue. MPS is a chronic condition that affects the fascia (connective tissue that covers the muscles, which develops knots, also known as trigger points).

What are trigger points?

Trigger points are irritable knots in the soft tissue that covers muscle tissue. Through injury or overuse, muscle fibres contract as a reactive and protective measure, creating tension in the form of hard and, palpable nodules. Overuse and sustained posture are the main culprits in developing trigger points.

What is myofascial or trigger-point release?

Releasing these nodules requires a hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure to release muscular shortness and tightness. This eliminates restrictions in connective tissue in orderto restore motion and alleviate pain. Therapy balls have proven effective at causing enough commotion in the tissue, prompting the release of these hard knots.

The struggle is on for active managers

David Einhorn closed out 2018 with his biggest annual loss ever for the 22-year-old Greenlight Capital.

The firm’s main hedge fund fell 9 per cent in December, extending this year’s decline to 34 percent, according to an investor update viewed by Bloomberg.

Greenlight posted some of the industry’s best returns in its early years, but has stumbled since losing more than 20 per cent in 2015.

Other value-investing managers have also struggled, as a decade of historically low interest rates and the rise of passive investing and quant trading pushed growth stocks past their inexpensive brethren. Three Bays Capital and SPO Partners & Co., which sought to make wagers on undervalued stocks, closed in 2018. Mr Einhorn has repeatedly expressed his frustration with the poor performance this year, while remaining steadfast in his commitment to value investing.

Greenlight, which posted gains only in May and October, underperformed both the broader market and its peers in 2018. The S&P 500 Index dropped 4.4 per cent, including dividends, while the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index, an early indicator of industry performance, fell 7 per cent through December. 28.

At the start of the year, Greenlight managed $6.3 billion in assets, according to a regulatory filing. By May, the firm was down to $5.5bn.
