ABU DHABI // A mechanic won Dh100 in a gambling game, but that was when his luck ran out.

When he demanded his winnings the man was severely beaten and injured by two other gamblers wielding a knife and a stick.

And when the mechanic called police in Al Gharbia to complain that he had been attacked and was badly hurt and unable to move, all three men were arrested.

Col Ojail Ali Al Junaibi, director of the Western Region Police Directorate, said the mechanic had received medical treatment and his condition was stable.

He confessed to taking part in an illegal gambling game, Col Al Junaibi said. His attackers, a carpenter and a blacksmith, were identified and arrested in their homes.

The victim did not know the other two and could not identify them, but he explained that he had dealings with them through the gambling game, which involves a belt, a screwdriver and an ironing board.

The case has been referred to public prosecution.
