FUJAIRAH // The family of Alaa Al Abduli, the 14-year-old Emirati pupil who suffered severe injuries in a fall from the second floor of her school, wants to move her to Germany for treatment.
Two weeks on from the incident and Alaa is still lying in bed with injuries to her left eye and jaw waiting to be treated.
Her mother, Rose Safonova, said she had a broken pelvis and numerous fractures in her jaw, among other injuries.
“They performed a surgical operation on her hand in Abu Dhabi after moving her from Khor Fakkan Hospital but the doctors told us that her arm will not function 100 per cent as they should have operated on the hand immediately after the fall,” she said. “They said that she will be able to gain 80 per cent of the arm function.”
The accident happened on the morning of Tuesday, October 4, when Alaa was sitting on a small wall between classrooms on the second floor that had no fence. She lost her balance and fell to the ground. Days later she was moved to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, in the capital.
“Khalifa hospital found out that she has a broken pelvis - that’s why she can’t walk yet - along with multiple fractures in her jaw and under her left eye,” Ms Safonova, a widow to an Emirati husband, said.
“She can’t close her eye and, due to her jaw condition, she can’t control the left side of her face. The doctors said that they can’t do anything for her eye until the fractures are cured.
“We asked the hospital to provide us with her medical report in order to move her to Germany for treatment and see if they can operate once more on her arm and fix her eye and jaw.”
