DUBAI // Three Asian men died instantly yesterday after a speeding car ploughed into them on the Business Bay Crossing. Two of the men had parked on the hard shoulder to help the third, a stranded motorist, when a vehicle driven by a Syrian expatriate ran into them. He had been trying to avoid crashing into the stalled car.
The bodies of two of the men were thrown off the bridge and into a sand pit. The third was left lying on the motorway heading towards Bur Dubai, said Salah Bu Farousha, head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution. "The Syrian man is now being held after Nuhai al Hubaishi, a traffic prosecutor, ordered his detention." Mr Bu Farousha said that according to preliminary investigations, the car of one of the victims, an Indian, broke down and had to stop on the left lane. The other two men parked their car further down the road to assist him. Mr Bu Farousha said that Traffic Public Prosecution would continue questioning the driver, as well as witnesses.
In a separate incident a Bangladeshi motorcyclist died when a driver lost control of his vehicle and ran him down in Al Khor Street on Friday. Police say the driver was intoxicated. There were several other accidents across Dubai over the weekend that caused injuries involving three pedestrians - two Asian men and an Arab girl, aged 18. "Driving recklessly and under the influence of liquor has been the main cause of accidents over the weekend," added Mr Bu Farousha.

How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
'Worse than a prison sentence'
Marie Byrne, a counsellor who volunteers at the UAE government's mental health crisis helpline, said the ordeal the crew had been through would take time to overcome.
“It was worse than a prison sentence, where at least someone can deal with a set amount of time incarcerated," she said.
“They were living in perpetual mystery as to how their futures would pan out, and what that would be.
“Because of coronavirus, the world is very different now to the one they left, that will also have an impact.
“It will not fully register until they are on dry land. Some have not seen their young children grow up while others will have to rebuild relationships.
“It will be a challenge mentally, and to find other work to support their families as they have been out of circulation for so long. Hopefully they will get the care they need when they get home.”
