First UAE reactor to go into operation in 2017

July 6, 2009: The Government appoints the nuclear scientist Hamed Al Kaabi as ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency. A policy document outlining plans to build a fleet of atomic reactors is published

October 4, 2009: The federal government issues a law to banning uranium enrichment in its civil nuclear programme

December 17, 2009: The US and UAE sign the so-called 123 Agreement for nuclear cooperation between the two countries

December 23, 2009: The President Sheikh Khalifa establishes by decree the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) to develop the UAE nuclear power programme.

December 27, 2009: A Dh73.4bn contract is awarded to a South Korean consortium led by Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco).

April 21, 2010: Barakah, 300 kilometres west of the capital, is chosen for the site of the plant.

October, 2010: The UAE is the first Arab country voted on to the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

July 18, 2012: Enec and Kepco begin pouring foundations.

August, 2012: Enec awards Dh11bn in contracts for 12,000 tonnes of uranium from American, British, Canadian, French and Russian companies.

2017: First reactor scheduled to go into operation.
