ABU DHABI // Firefighters are battling a blaze in downtown Abu Dhabi, with police closing part of Hamdan Street shortly before 7pm on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses said smoke and flames could be seen rising from the roof of an older-style apartment building in the Electra area.

Flames and smoke appeared to be coming from the top two floors.

“Fire on top of building minutes before iftar,” eyewitness Laila wrote on Twitter.

“Praying that all are safe.”
