DUBAI // Where there's smoke, there's not necessarily fire.

Dubai International Financial Centre was evacuated today around 9.30am and smoke was spotted billowing from beneath the Gate Building, but Civil Defence officials on the scene said the commotion was part of a drill.

An official said the smoke was an elaborate part of the scheduled fire drill and "was just to get people's attention".

"If it was a big fire, I'd be there," a Civil Defence spokesman said.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the building, but were allowed back in by 10.15am. Fire trucks, ambulances and police cars remained on the scene for about 45 minutes.
