AJMAN// A fire broke out in a residential area of Al Jurf on Sunday.

Civil Defence crews arrived on the scene at 3pm and put the fire out in under 30 minutes, residents said.

“All tenants rushed down and tried to use the pipe of fire extinguisher located in my building to put out the fire till the civil defence arrived,” 45-year-old resident Shaikh Mohammed Asif said.

Civil Defence teams evacuated the residents from the building and cordoned off the area, he said.

“In the beginning, the fire was minor and then it increased because of the wind. The smoke’s height was almost 8 to 10-foot,” Mr Asif said.

Omar Ali, 33, saw the fire as it started but could not determine the cause.

“I was in my apartment when it started and saw the fire. It happened in a land where people throw their garbage,” the Indian salesman said.

Mohammed Behzad, a Pakistani businessman living on the ground floor, said the fire caused the glass from his balcony door to break but his property was not otherwise damaged.

“At that time, I was sitting with family watching TV. We felt the heat of the fire inside the apartment and left immediately when we saw the blaze,” the 33-year-old said.

“There were a small bag and trolly in the balcony. And when the fire caught the trolly, we pushed it out to avoid the enter of blaze into the flat.”

The site was handed over to Al Hamidiya Police Station to investigate the cause.

No injuries were reported.
