Fines issued after workers’ homes inspections in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI // Companies have been fined a total of Dh325,000 by Abu Dhabi Municipality over the poor conditions of their workers’ accommodations.

The municipality has ordered them to improve their employees’ living conditions.

In the past few weeks, the municipality conducted five-day inspections of temporary labour housing in Abu Dhabi, Baniyas, Al Wathba and Al Shamkha, which it said was to ensure workers’ safety, protect lives and minimise risks to safety.

Inspectors found 14 breaches of health, safety and environmental standards. They included overcrowding, lack of firefighting equipment, lack of dining rooms, poor kitchen hygiene, lack of recreational facilities and poor general cleanliness.

The municipality has urged housing supervisors to ensure that they comply with health and safety standards.
